Vice President Kamala Harris is set to unveil a new economic plan focused on revitalizing American manufacturing in a speech at the Economic Club of Pittsburgh. According to a senior campaign official, Harris will emphasize her commitment to capitalism, innovation, and limited government intervention, distancing herself from ideological extremes. The proposal aims to reframe Harris as a partner to the business community, rather than an adversary.
Harris’ address will highlight her middle-class upbringing and political experience, including her work as California Attorney General, where she collaborated with companies to address privacy concerns. As Vice President, she has worked to increase access to capital for community banks and small businesses.
In recent weeks, Harris has softened her rhetoric towards corporate America, shifting from accusations of “price gouging” to a more nuanced approach. Her speech is expected to emphasize the need for responsible business practices, while also acknowledging the importance of the private sector in driving economic growth.
The move comes as Harris seeks to counter attacks from Republican opponent Donald Trump, who has portrayed her as a threat to the US economy. Trump has proposed his own manufacturing plan, including expanded tax credits for research and development, a “manufacturing ambassador,” and tariffs on imports.
Recent polls suggest Harris’ efforts to rebrand herself as a pragmatic economic leader are gaining traction. A Financial Times-Michigan Ross poll found Harris with a slim lead over Trump on economic issues, while other high-quality polls show her narrowing Trump’s advantage by double digits.
With Election Day just around the corner, Harris’ speech is seen as a crucial opportunity to continue chipping away at Trump’s edge on economic issues.
