Renewable Energy Breakthrough: Microreactor Startup Oklo Takes Major Step Forward
In a significant development, nuclear startup Oklo has received the green light from the Department of Energy to conduct site investigations for its planned microreactor at Idaho National Laboratory. This milestone brings the company closer to breaking ground on its first commercial project, slated for 2026, with the goal of having the reactor operational by 2027.
Oklo’s microreactors, dubbed Aurora, boast smaller and simpler designs, ranging from 15 megawatts to over 100 megawatts. This innovative approach addresses the growing demand for electric power, driven by the tech sector’s rapid expansion of data centers and the increasing electrification of the economy.
The company’s CEO, Jacob DeWitte, attributes the industry’s struggles to keep up with market interest to outdated business models and inadequate execution. Oklo’s unique approach, which includes direct sales of power to customers under long-term contracts, aims to disrupt the status quo.
Although Oklo still needs approval from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, the company remains optimistic about its prospects. The recently enacted ADVANCE Act, which expedites license application decisions, may provide a tailwind for Oklo’s ambitions.
With 1,350 megawatts of interest from potential customers, Oklo is poised to bring multiple plants online starting in 2028-2029. The company’s microreactors are well-suited for data centers, which require energy outputs similar to Oklo’s plant sizes.
However, nuclear fuel supply remains a significant constraint. Oklo has partnered with Centrus Energy, a U.S.-based supplier, and has secured the necessary fuel for its Idaho plant. The company’s reactors will also have the ability to recycle fuel, diversifying its supply chain.
Despite facing challenges, including a rejected initial license application, Oklo is pushing forward. With its sights set on revolutionizing the nuclear industry, the company is poised to make a significant impact on the renewable energy landscape.
