**Cybersecurity Threat: Iranian Nationals Charged with Hacking Trump Campaign**
In a significant development, the US Department of Justice has filed charges against three Iranian nationals accused of orchestrating a massive cyberattack on the 2024 presidential campaign of Donald Trump. The indictment alleges that the trio, employed by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), engaged in a broad-scale hacking campaign targeting government officials, media figures, and non-governmental organizations.
According to US Attorney General Merrick Garland, the IRGC, designated as a foreign terrorist organization, poses a grave threat to national security. “The Justice Department will not tolerate attempts by Iran, or any foreign power, to interfere in our elections and undermine our democracy,” Garland emphasized.
The 37-page indictment accuses Masoud Jalili, Seyyed Ali Aghamiri, and Yasar Balaghi of hacking conspiracy, computer fraud, wire fraud, identity theft, and conspiring to support terrorism. The alleged hacking campaign, which began in January 2020, employed sophisticated social engineering techniques, including spearphishing, to gain access to sensitive information.
In May 2024, the hackers allegedly breached the personal accounts of Trump campaign officials, stealing emails and confidential documents. They then attempted to leak the stolen materials to the media and campaign officials supporting President Joe Biden, the presumptive Democratic nominee at the time. The DOJ alleges that the hack was a deliberate effort to discredit Trump’s campaign ahead of the 2024 presidential election.
The charges come as concerns about foreign interference in the US presidential race continue to escalate. US intelligence officials have warned that Iran, China, and Russia are actively working to influence the election outcome, using tactics such as artificial intelligence-powered disinformation campaigns and manipulation of public opinion.
Garland reiterated that the US will not permit authoritarian regimes to undermine its democratic process. “These regimes, which violate the human rights of their own citizens, do not get a say in our country’s democratic process,” he stated.
