Coffee Chain Workers Unite: 500th Store Joins Forces for Better Working Conditions
In a significant milestone, a Starbucks store in Bellingham, Washington, has become the 500th location to join the Starbucks Workers United union. This marks a major victory for the workers, who have been fighting for better wages, benefits, and working conditions. Since the first store unionized in 2021, over 11,000 baristas have joined the movement, demonstrating their collective power and determination.
According to Lynne Fox, president of Workers United, “This achievement is a testament to the grassroots efforts of workers demanding a voice in their workplace. Starbucks partners have bravely stood up for their rights, seeking respect, fair compensation, and equal opportunities.”
In a collaborative effort, the union and Starbucks have been negotiating a foundational framework for labor agreements. Monthly meetings have been taking place since April, resulting in 100 new locations joining the union in just six months. The company’s CEO, Brian Niccol, has committed to bargaining in good faith, recognizing the importance of a fair labor deal.
Baristas from the Bellingham store wrote to Niccol, emphasizing the need for support to excel in their roles and provide exceptional customer service. They believe that the company’s success hinges on their ability to do their jobs well, which in turn depends on receiving the necessary support.
As the union and Starbucks continue to work together, they are making progress on key issues. The ultimate goal is to establish a collective bargaining agreement that benefits both parties. With 500 stores now united, the movement is expected to gain even more momentum in the fight for better working conditions and fair treatment.
