**India Aims to Fabricate First Chip in Two Years, Commerce Minister Reveals**
In a significant development, India is poised to manufacture its first chip in the next two years, according to Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal. This ambitious plan comes as major US chipmakers, including Nvidia, AMD, and Micron, set their sights on expanding in India.
Goyal expressed confidence in India’s ability to deliver, citing the country’s talent and skills. He referenced a recent visit to Silicon Valley, where he saw numerous Indians working in top semiconductor companies, including on management teams.
While it’s unlikely India will produce cutting-edge chips without the expertise of companies like Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) and Samsung, Goyal remains optimistic. He believes India will be able to deliver its first chip by 2026-2027.
The minister’s efforts to attract US corporations have already borne fruit, with Apple finding success in India. The tech giant has diversified its supply chain away from China, with 14% of the world’s iPhones now manufactured in India. This number is expected to grow, with Apple increasing assembly in the country and boosting its retail presence.
Apple’s expansion has created 150,000 jobs across manufacturing facilities in India, making it the largest employer in the country’s electronics industry. The company has also begun manufacturing other products, including iPads, AirPods, and Apple Watches, in India.
Goyal emphasized that India’s success is not dependent on China’s troubles, but rather on its own competencies and capabilities. He met with Wall Street investors, including executives from BlackRock, Warburg Pincus, and KKR, to discuss opportunities in India.
Tech companies like Google, Microsoft, and Nvidia are bringing artificial intelligence expertise to India, which the government has welcomed. However, analysts warn that India must address larger issues, including poor infrastructure, bureaucracy, and red tape, to facilitate corporate expansion plans.
