At the tender age of 16, I embarked on a journey that would shape my future in ways I never thought possible. A two-week internship at a prestigious hedge fund not only solidified my interest in finance but also set me on a path to pursue higher education in business. Growing up, my parents regaled me with stories of their experiences in the finance industry, sparking a curiosity in me that only grew stronger with time. While the allure of a lucrative career was undeniable, I knew I wanted more than just a fat paycheck. I sought a work-life balance, a supportive work environment, and colleagues who shared my values. As a secondary school student, I was eager to explore the world of finance but lacked practical experience. That’s when I stumbled upon an internship opportunity at Modular Asset Management, a Singapore-based hedge fund. The fact that it was an on-site internship during the pandemic made it all the more appealing. I submitted my application, complete with a résumé and video introduction, and was thrilled to be shortlisted and eventually selected for the position. My mentor took a chance on me, citing my eagerness to learn as the deciding factor. As the youngest intern, I was intimidated at first, but my determination to contribute drove me to quickly learn advanced Excel techniques and assist my supervisor with profit and loss sheets. Although I didn’t contribute to major projects, I gained invaluable insights into the inner workings of the hedge fund, witnessing strategic discussions and decision-making processes firsthand. That internship was a turning point in my life, confirming my passion for finance and motivating me to pursue a business degree. In hindsight, I wish I had done more internships as a teenager, as it would have provided me with even more exposure to the corporate world. Nonetheless, I’m grateful for that early start, which has given me a head start in understanding the industry and shaping my future.
