**Electric Vehicle Sales Shake-Up: GM Overtakes Ford in Q3**
In a surprise turn of events, General Motors has surpassed Ford Motor in electric vehicle sales during the third quarter, marking a significant shift in the EV landscape. According to recent reports, Ford’s EV growth has slowed, allowing GM to take the lead.
Ford reported a modest 0.7% increase in third-quarter U.S. new vehicle sales, with a 12.2% rise in EVs compared to the same period last year. While this represents a 45% increase in EV sales year-to-date, GM has managed to outsell Ford with 70,450 units sold through September, a roughly 60% year-over-year increase during the third quarter.
Hyundai Motor, including Kia, remains the second-largest seller of EVs in the U.S., with a lead of over 18,000 units ahead of both Ford and GM. Tesla continues to dominate the EV market, with the South Korean automaker trailing behind.
GM’s surge in EV sales can be attributed to its expanded lineup of eight “Ultium-based” EV models, offering consumers a wider range of options. In contrast, Ford has focused on expanding its hybrid offerings in the short term, with only three EV models currently available.
“We’ve listened to customers to offer them vehicles with powertrains to meet their specific needs, and their response validates our product strategy,” said Andrew Frick, president of Ford Blue and customer service.
Despite Ford’s de-emphasis on near-term EV plans, the company remains confident in its sales performance, maintaining its No. 2 position behind Tesla. Ford’s overall third-quarter sales are expected to have outpaced the industry, with gains in EVs and hybrid models accounting for 14% of its sales during the quarter.
