**Automaker Halts Production at Two US Factories Due to Hurricane-Related Supply Chain Disruptions**
General Motors has temporarily suspended vehicle production at two of its US-based manufacturing facilities, citing supply chain disruptions caused by Hurricane Helene. The affected plants, located in Flint, Michigan, and Arlington, Texas, produce high-demand large pickups and SUVs, including the Chevrolet Tahoe, Cadillac Escalade, and GMC Yukon.
The shutdown, which began on Thursday, is expected to last until at least Monday, according to a message sent to workers at the Arlington plant. GM spokespersons declined to provide a specific timeline for the resumption of production, stating only that the company is working closely with its suppliers to resolve the issue as quickly and safely as possible.
Hurricane Helene made landfall in Florida last week, causing widespread destruction and disruption to supply chains across the southeastern United States. The storm has claimed at least 215 lives, with hundreds more still missing. While GM has not disclosed the identities of the affected suppliers or their locations, the company’s vice president of global purchasing and supply chain, Jeffrey Morrison, acknowledged that the hurricane and a recent port workers strike have had a significant impact on its operations.
Morrison noted that GM has taken steps to mitigate the effects of supply chain disruptions, including mapping its value chain more deeply and working closely with suppliers to address production issues. The company’s experience during the pandemic has also helped it develop strategies to better track parts and potential problems, he added.
The shutdown is likely to have significant implications for GM’s production schedule and bottom line, given the high demand for its large pickups and SUVs. However, the company remains committed to supporting its suppliers and minimizing the impact of the disruption on its operations.
