In a surprising move, former Republican Representative Liz Cheney joined forces with Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris on the campaign trail in Ripon, Wisconsin. This rare bipartisan appearance marks a strategic effort by the Harris campaign to win over Republican voters in key battleground states. Cheney, a vocal critic of former President Donald Trump, declared her support for Harris, citing the importance of a peaceful transfer of power in a democratic republic.
Cheney’s endorsement is significant, given her party credentials and her role as vice chair of the House select committee that investigated the January 6th Capitol riot. Her father, former Vice President Dick Cheney, also plans to vote for Harris. The joint event took place just a day after a federal judge unsealed evidence against Trump in his criminal election interference case.
Ripon, Wisconsin, was chosen for its historical significance as the birthplace of the Republican Party. Harris acknowledged the town’s importance, promising to be “a president for all Americans” and appealing directly to Republican voters. Cheney echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the need for country over party.
The Harris campaign has been actively courting Republican supporters, launching “Republicans for Harris” in August. Prominent Republicans, including former Trump White House aide Cassidy Hutchinson, have since endorsed Harris’ presidential campaign. Ahead of Harris’ visit, a group of over 20 Wisconsin Republican leaders launched the Wisconsin Republicans for Harris-Walz campaign platform, endorsing Harris for president.
Recent polls show Harris and Trump neck-and-neck nationally, but Harris holds a small lead in Wisconsin. As the presidential campaign enters its final month, this unusual bipartisan alliance may prove pivotal in swaying undecided voters.
