**Government Official Arrested for Witness Tampering and Obstruction of Justice**
A high-ranking official in New York City’s administration has been taken into custody and charged with serious crimes, including witness tampering and obstruction of justice. Mohamed Bahi, 40, who until recently worked in the administration of Mayor Eric Adams, allegedly organized fundraisers for the mayor’s 2021 campaign and accepted illegal donations.
According to federal prosecutors, Bahi attempted to impede the investigation by deleting evidence from his phone and instructing others to lie to federal agents. The complaint alleges that Bahi organized a fundraiser at a construction company’s headquarters, where he suggested that the company’s owner have employees make donations to Adams’ campaign and then reimburse them.
Four employees and the owner made donations, and all have since spoken to law enforcement. The owner admitted to participating in the illegal straw donations, and Bahi is now facing charges that could result in up to 20 years in prison.
Bahi’s arrest marks the first time someone other than Mayor Adams has been charged in the investigation. Adams himself faces conspiracy, wire fraud, and bribery charges, which he has denied, calling them “based on lies.”
The investigation is ongoing, with prosecutors pursuing additional related investigations and hinting that more charges may be brought against Adams and others. Bahi is expected to appear in court on Tuesday to face the charges against him.
