According to Aaron Jagdfeld, CEO of Generac, the leading generator company, the pressure on the power grid is only going to intensify, driven by the rapid growth of data centers and the increasing severity of weather events.
In a recent interview, Jagdfeld highlighted the devastating impact of power outages on homeowners, businesses, and institutions, citing the staggering 1.2 billion hours lost to outages in the US during the first nine months of 2024. As the demand for technology continues to surge, with the rise of artificial intelligence and electric vehicles, the grid is struggling to keep up.
Jagdfeld emphasized that while the US is making progress in incorporating solar and wind power into the energy mix, these sources are inherently intermittent, leaving the grid vulnerable to disruptions. The recent hurricane season has brought several major storms, including Hurricane Helene and the Category 5 storm Milton, which is predicted to wreak havoc on Florida’s Tampa Bay region.
The CEO of Generac warned that the consequences of inaction will be severe, with the potential for damages to reach $175 billion. “The science is clear,” Jagdfeld said. “The air temperatures are warming, the water temperatures are warming. We can debate what caused it, but I think the reality of it is the outcome is more extreme weather.”
