**Uber Revamps Platform with Sustainability in Mind**
In a bid to reduce its environmental footprint, Uber has announced a series of updates to its platform, including an “EV preference” feature that allows customers to opt for fully electric vehicles by default. This move comes as part of the company’s goal to become a “zero-emissions platform” by 2040.
Speaking at the annual Go Get Zero sustainability conference in London, Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi emphasized the need for policymakers and businesses to work together to achieve zero-emission goals. He highlighted the importance of making electric vehicles more affordable, implementing stronger EV mandates, and providing incentives for drivers who use eco-friendly options.
To support its drivers, Uber is launching an “EV Mentor” program, which connects drivers with experts who can answer questions about electric mobility. The company is also introducing an AI-powered chatbot, built in partnership with OpenAI’s ChatGPT, to provide drivers with information on buying and using electric vehicles.
In addition to its ride-hailing services, Uber is expanding its sustainable offerings on the delivery side of its platform. The company is adding farmers’ market produce to its Uber Eats service in New York City and Los Angeles, and investing nearly $1 million to help restaurants in Paris switch to eco-friendly packaging options.
According to the International Council on Clean Transportation, the transportation sector is responsible for around 25% of global carbon emissions. By promoting sustainable practices and reducing its environmental impact, Uber aims to play a significant role in mitigating climate change.
