Amazon Expands Same-Day Prescription Delivery to 20 New Cities
In a move to revolutionize healthcare, Amazon is set to introduce same-day prescription delivery to 20 additional cities in 2025, making it available to nearly half of the US population. This expansion is part of the company’s ongoing effort to disrupt the healthcare industry.
Amazon Pharmacy, launched in 2020, allows customers to order medication online with free delivery for Prime members. The service has seen significant growth, with the number of customers doubling in the past year. To facilitate same-day delivery, Amazon is embedding pharmacies within its same-day delivery facilities, often located near major metropolitan areas.
The new cities set to receive same-day prescription delivery include Boston, Dallas, Minneapolis, Philadelphia, and San Diego. With this expansion, Amazon aims to address the growing issue of “pharmacy deserts,” where patients have limited access to medications and pharmacist care.
In most cases, customers can receive their medication at home by 10 pm if they order by 4 pm. Amazon has also been testing prescription delivery by drone in one Texas city, further accelerating medication delivery.
The company faces competition from traditional pharmacies like CVS and Walgreens, as well as other large retailers offering pharmacy services. However, Amazon’s online platform and same-day delivery capabilities position it as a strong contender in the market.
This move is part of Amazon’s multiyear effort to make inroads in the healthcare industry, which includes its acquisition of primary care provider One Medical and the launch of its telehealth service, Amazon Care. With its expanding presence in healthcare, Amazon is poised to transform the way people access medical care and services.
