Google Shakes Up Leadership: New Search & Ads Chief Announced

Google Shakes Up Leadership: A New Era Begins

In a significant move, Google’s CEO Sundar Pichai has announced that Prabhakar Raghavan, the company’s search and ads boss, will be stepping down from his role after 12 years of leading teams across the search company. Raghavan will take on a new role as Google’s chief technologist, reporting directly to Pichai.

A New Chapter for Raghavan

Pichai praised Raghavan’s contributions to Google, saying, “Prabhakar has decided it’s time to make a big leap in his own career.” In his new role, Raghavan will partner closely with Pichai and other Google leaders to provide technical direction and leadership, focusing on growing the company’s culture of tech excellence.

Nick Fox Takes the Reins

Longtime Google executive Nick Fox will be taking over Raghavan’s role, leading Google’s Knowledge and Information division, which includes search, ads, and commerce products. Fox has been instrumental in shaping Google’s AI product roadmap and has a deep understanding of the company’s ads business unit.

A Restructuring Effort

The move comes as Google continues to restructure its teams to stay ahead in the AI arms race and faces increased competition. The company is also dealing with several antitrust lawsuits related to its search and ads business.

New Opportunities and Challenges

In addition to the leadership changes, Pichai announced that the team working on Google’s Gemini app will join Google DeepMind under Google’s AI head Demis Hassabis. This move is expected to improve feedback loops and enable fast deployment of new models in the Gemini app. The Assistant teams focused on devices and home experiences will also move to the Platforms and Devices unit, allowing them to work more closely with the product surfaces they’re building for.

A New Era of Innovation

As Google navigates this period of change, one thing is clear: the company is committed to driving innovation and staying ahead of the curve. With Raghavan and Fox in their new roles, Google is poised to tackle the challenges and opportunities of the AI era head-on.
