A Reliable Partner in the Middle East
As the US considers imposing restrictions on chip sales to certain countries, the CEO of the UAE’s premier AI firm, G42, is confident that his country can guarantee the safety and security of sensitive technology.
A Guarantee of Safety and Security
Peng Xiao, CEO of G42, emphasized that the UAE has demonstrated its transparency and ability to ensure the secure deployment and use of chips. This comes as the Biden administration weighs limits on chip sales to the Middle East, particularly to countries with ties to China.
Understanding the US Position
Xiao understands the US concerns about protecting American technology and intellectual property. However, he believes that the UAE’s track record of transparency and security makes it an ideal partner for collaboration and technology sharing.
A Door Open to Collaboration
The CEO is optimistic about the potential for increased collaboration between the US and the UAE in the field of AI. He cites the recent $1.5 billion deal between Microsoft and Abu Dhabi’s G42 as a significant nod of approval for the UAE’s AI ambitions.
Cutting Ties with China
Earlier this year, G42 sold its stake in Chinese companies, including Bytedance, to reassure American partners. The company’s Chief Technology Officer, Kiril Evtimov, described the move as a commercial and technological decision.
A Strong Bilateral Relationship
The UAE and the US have a strong bilateral relationship, with the UAE already having invested $1 trillion in the US. The country’s sovereign wealth funds are major investors in American real estate, infrastructure, and technology sectors.
A Regulatory Sandbox for AI
Abu Dhabi hopes to expand its partnership with the US through AI, with OpenAI CEO Sam Altman suggesting that the UAE could serve as a regulatory sandbox to test artificial intelligence.
Regional Ambitions
The UAE is not alone in its AI ambitions. Saudi Arabia is also pushing to gain access to advanced US-made technology, with officials optimistic about securing deals within the next year.
