Powering the AI Revolution: Tech Giants Turn to Nuclear Energy
The rapid growth of artificial intelligence (AI) has brought about an unprecedented demand for energy to power the data centers that support these technologies. In response, tech giants like Microsoft and Google are turning to nuclear energy to meet their growing energy needs.
A Clean and Reliable Source of Energy
Google has recently announced a deal with Kairos Power, a developer of small modular reactors, to purchase nuclear power for its data centers. This move is expected to bring additional clean energy capacity online, supporting the growth of AI technologies. “The grid needs these kinds of clean, reliable sources of energy that can support the build out of these technologies,” said Michael Terrell, senior director for energy and climate at Google.
Microsoft Joins the Nuclear Energy Bandwagon
Microsoft has also signed a deal with U.S. energy firm Constellation to resurrect a defunct reactor at the Three Mile Island nuclear power plant in Pennsylvania. This move marks a significant investment in nuclear energy, demonstrating the tech giant’s commitment to powering its AI ambitions.
The Energy Demands of AI
The surge in demand for AI applications has led to a corresponding increase in energy consumption. Global electricity consumption from data centers, AI, and the cryptocurrency sector is expected to double from 460 terawatt-hours (TWh) in 2022 to over 1,000 TWh in 2026. This rapid growth has put pressure on tech companies to find sustainable energy sources to power their data centers.
The Controversy Surrounding Nuclear Energy
While nuclear energy offers a nearly carbon-free form of electricity, it is not without its controversy. Climate activists argue that nuclear power poses hazardous environmental and safety risks, and is not a genuine source of renewable power. However, proponents of nuclear energy argue that it is a reliable and clean source of energy, essential for powering the growth of AI technologies.
A Sustainable Future for AI
As the demand for AI continues to grow, tech companies must find sustainable ways to power their data centers. Nuclear energy may offer a solution, but it is crucial to consider the environmental and safety implications of this technology. As Rosanne Kincaid-Smith, chief operating officer of Northern Data Group, notes, “If it is built and securitized in the right way, I do think nuclear is the future.”
