Travel Trends Shift: From Bucket List to Off-the-Beaten-Track Destinations
After a year of splurging on big-ticket trips to popular hotspots, travelers are now seeking quieter, lesser-known destinations. According to recent trend reports from Expedia and Booking.com, vacationers are opting for off-the-beaten-track locations that offer a more relaxed and authentic experience.
The Rise of Alternative Destinations
Expedia’s “Unpack ’25” report reveals that 63% of travelers are likely to visit an off-the-beaten-track destination on their next trip. Flight searches on Expedia from September 2023 to August 2024 show a growing interest in destinations like:
- Medellín, Colombia
- Porto, Portugal
- Mostar, Bosnia and Herzegovina
United Airlines is also expanding its international services to Senegal, Greenland, and Mongolia in response to the growing demand for alternative destinations.
Why Travelers Are Seeking Off-the-Beaten-Track Destinations
According to Greg Schulze, Expedia Group’s Chief Commercial Officer, travelers are looking for destinations that offer a more economical and relaxing experience. “Detour destinations often are more economical for travelers… they can get a superior experience for less money,” he says.
Additionally, travelers are seeking authentic experiences that allow them to immerse themselves in local cultures. James Marshall, Vice President of Global Air Accounts at Expedia, notes that travel influencers are driving interest in new destinations and amplifying their appeal through social media.
The Joy of Missing Out
Expedia has coined the term “JOMO travel” (joy of missing out) to describe the growing trend of travelers embracing the idea of missing out on popular destinations in favor of more secluded spots. Marshall says that 62% of surveyed travelers believe that JOMO travel reduces stress and anxiety, and nearly half say it allows them to better reconnect with loved ones.
