Mark Zuckerberg’s Meta, the tech giant worth a staggering $1.5 trillion, has taken drastic measures against nearly 30 employees in its Los Angeles office. The reason? These high-paid engineers, earning six-figure salaries, were caught red-handed misusing the company’s $25 meal scheme to order household essentials like toothpaste and washing powder.
A Scheme Gone Wrong
Meta provides its staff with free breakfast, lunch, and dinner at its larger offices, while those in smaller offices receive vouchers for delivery apps like Grubhub. However, some employees saw an opportunity to exploit the system, using the vouchers to order groceries and cosmetics from stores featured on the apps. The list of items ordered was shocking, with wine glasses and laundry detergent making an appearance.
A Warning Unheeded
Initially, staff were given warnings about abusing the meal voucher scheme, but those who continued to flout the rules were shown the door last week. This move came as Meta laid off a larger number of staff across WhatsApp, Instagram, and its virtual reality unit, citing the need to restructure certain departments and align resources with long-term strategic goals.

Free food has long been a staple of Silicon Valley companies like Meta, seen as an incentive to lure employees into the office rather than working from home.
