Trump Slams Judge as “Most Evil Person” Over Release of Sensitive Documents
In a scathing attack, former President Donald Trump lashed out at U.S. District Court Judge Tanya Chutkan, calling her “the most evil person” for ordering the release of nearly 1,900 pages of previously sealed documents related to his criminal election interference case.
Election Interference Allegations
Trump alleged that Judge Chutkan’s decision to make the files public was a deliberate attempt to harm his chances in the upcoming presidential election. “What judge would say ‘we’re going to release something, you know, a couple of days before?’ ” Trump questioned during an interview on Dan Bongino’s podcast. He claimed that the release of the documents was a form of election interference, designed to sway public opinion against him.
Battle Over Document Release
The controversy surrounds the release of filings by special counsel Jack Smith, who has charged Trump with crimes related to his attempts to undo his loss in the 2020 election to President Joe Biden. Trump’s lawyers had argued that the documents should be released after the election, citing concerns about election interference. However, Judge Chutkan rejected this argument, stating that delaying the release would “risk undermining the public interest.”
Judge Chutkan’s Stance
In her order, Judge Chutkan emphasized that withholding information from the public solely due to potential political consequences would itself constitute election interference. She also criticized Trump’s lawyers for focusing on political rhetoric rather than addressing the legal issues at hand, describing their approach as “unresponsive, unhelpful, and unbefitting of experienced defense counsel.”
Trump’s Response
Trump’s comments about Judge Chutkan come a year after she imposed a limited gag order in the case, barring him and other parties from making public statements that target the special counsel, defense lawyers, or court staff. While the gag order did not restrict Trump from commenting about Judge Chutkan herself, his latest remarks are likely to fuel further controversy in an already contentious case.
