Young Voters Favor Harris Over Trump, But Enthusiasm Gap Remains
A recent survey of young Americans has found that Vice President Kamala Harris holds a significant lead over former President Donald Trump among voters aged 18-34. The poll, conducted by the Youth & Money Survey, shows Harris with a 20 percentage point advantage over Trump, with 60% of respondents saying they would vote for her in a head-to-head matchup.
Job Creation and Economy Top Issues for Young Voters
When asked to choose their top three most important issues when voting for president, younger Americans selected job creation and the economy, taxes, and trust in government as their top concerns. Immigration, the environment, and student debt were also significant issues for many respondents.
TikTok Gains Ground as Source of Election Information
The survey found that TikTok has become a major source of election information for young voters, with 36% of respondents listing it as one of their top three sources. This puts TikTok alongside TV news and websites as a primary source of news about the election.
Enthusiasm Gap Remains a Concern for Democrats
Despite Harris’s lead, the survey found that many young voters are not enthusiastic about the election. A significant 38% of respondents said they were disappointed with the slate of presidential candidates, while only 20% said they were excited.
Voting Plans and Preferences
The survey also found that many young voters are still unsure about how they will cast their ballots. 32% said they were not sure where or how they would vote, while 31% planned to vote in person on Election Day. Almost one-in-four respondents said they would vote by mail, and 13% said they would vote early in person.
Control of Congress and Local Elections Matter to Young Voters
The survey found that a significant majority of young voters believe that the results of down-ballot races are either very important or somewhat important. Control of both the House and Senate are up for grabs this November, and cities and towns across the country will vote on thousands of local elected positions and ballot initiatives.
