United Airlines Raises the Bar: What You Need to Know About Earning Elite Status

Airline Loyalty Programs Get a Makeover: What You Need to Know

Changes Ahead for United Airlines’ MileagePlus Program

If you’re a frequent flyer with United Airlines, be prepared to spend more to reach elite status next year. The airline is increasing the thresholds to earn elite status on its MileagePlus program by about 25%, in an effort to boost profits and give its loyalty program a more exclusive feel.

What’s Behind the Changes?

In recent years, airlines have been shifting their loyalty programs to reward travelers based on how much they spend, rather than how far they fly. Co-branded credit cards have become a crucial business for airlines, with banks paying carriers when consumers use these cards. As a result, airlines have seen an increase in high-spending customers, leading to crowded lounges and early boarding groups.

New Requirements for Elite Status

To earn Silver Premier status in 2025, customers will need to earn 5,000 premier qualifying points (PQP) and fly 15 qualifying flights, up from 4,000 PQP and 12 qualifying flights. Travelers can earn one PQP for every $1 spent on United and other qualifying flights. Alternatively, customers can earn Silver status by spending $6,000 on United flights, up from $5,000, regardless of the number of flights taken.

Co-Branded Credit Cards Play a Key Role

Customers can also earn PQP by using co-branded credit cards. For every $20 spent on these cards, customers will earn one PQP, although some cards in United’s portfolio will offer one PQP for every $15 spent.

What Do These Changes Mean for You?

If you’re a loyal United Airlines customer, these changes may impact your ability to earn elite status. However, if you’re willing to spend more, you’ll still be able to enjoy perks like free upgrades, earlier boarding, and better seat selection.

The Future of Airline Loyalty Programs

As airlines continue to evolve their loyalty programs, it’s likely that we’ll see more changes in the future. One thing is certain – airlines will continue to prioritize high-spending customers, making it more challenging for budget-conscious travelers to earn elite status.
