Major Shift at Boeing: Diversity Department Disbanded Amidst Layoffs and Strike
In a surprising move, Boeing has dismantled its global diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) department, according to sources familiar with the matter. This decision comes as the company prepares to cut 17,000 jobs by early next year.
A New Chapter for DEI Staff
The staff from the DEI office will be integrated into another human resources team focused on talent and employee experience. Sara Bowen, the vice president leading the DEI department, has announced her resignation from the company on LinkedIn. In her post, she reflected on her time at Boeing, saying, “It has been the privilege of my lifetime to lead Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion at the Boeing company these past 5+ years.”
Layoffs and Union Strikes
The disbanding of the DEI department is just one part of a larger restructuring effort at Boeing. The company is planning to cut thousands of jobs, which has led to tensions with the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM). Over 33,000 IAM members have been on strike at Boeing locations in Washington, Oregon, and California since September 13.
New Contract Proposal
A new contract proposal is on the table, which would deliver a 38% wage increase over four years and a $12,000 ratification bonus. The proposal also includes a reinstatement of Boeing’s Aerospace Machinists Performance Program (AMPP) incentive plan and a guaranteed minimum annual payout of 4% for both 2024 and February 2025. The union has endorsed this proposal, calling on members to approve the new contract.
A Turning Point for IAM Members
IAM District 751 has posted an endorsement of the newest offer on social media, urging members to lock in the gains achieved so far. IAM International President Brian Bryant believes that this contract would send a powerful message to workers across the US who are seeking to join unions. Voting on the proposal is set to close on Monday, with results expected to be announced soon.
A New Era at Boeing
As Boeing navigates these significant changes, one thing is clear: the company is undergoing a major transformation. The disbanding of the DEI department and the ongoing labor disputes are just two pieces of a larger puzzle. As the company looks to the future, it remains to be seen how these changes will impact its workforce and operations.
