China’s EV Showdown: Tesla Stumbles, BYD Soars

Electric Vehicle Market in China: A Tale of Two Giants

As the world’s largest electric vehicle market, China has been a key battleground for global automakers. In October, two of the industry’s biggest players, Tesla and BYD, reported vastly different fortunes.

Tesla’s China Sales Slip

The US electric vehicle pioneer sold 68,280 China-made vehicles in October, a 5.3% decline from the same period last year, according to data from the China Passenger Car Association. This disappointing performance sent Tesla’s stock tumbling over 1% in premarket trading on Monday. Moreover, deliveries of the China-made Model 3 and Model Y vehicles plummeted 22.7% from the previous month.

BYD’s Meteoric Rise

Meanwhile, Chinese rival BYD continued its remarkable ascent, posting a 66.2% year-on-year increase in passenger vehicle sales to a record 500,526 units last month. Overseas shipments accounted for a modest 6% of total sales, according to a BYD filing. The company’s Dynasty and Ocean series of EVs and plug-in hybrids have been particularly popular among Chinese consumers.

Tesla’s Third-Quarter Earnings Beat Estimates

Despite the decline in sales, Tesla’s third-quarter earnings exceeded expectations, thanks in part to one-time gains from layoffs in the prior quarter. The company also reported its first annual gain in deliveries this year, driven by aggressive sales promotions. However, BYD outpaced Tesla in revenue terms, marking a significant shift in the market dynamics.

Tesla Extends Financing Scheme

In an effort to boost sales, Tesla extended its zero-interest financing scheme for certain Model 3 and Model Y cars by another month to the end of November. This move, first introduced in July, aims to attract more customers in the competitive Chinese market.

As the electric vehicle landscape continues to evolve, one thing is clear: BYD is rapidly closing the gap with Tesla, and the battle for dominance in China is far from over.
