Rise and Shine: The Morning Routine of a High-Achiever
Vice President Kamala Harris, the Democratic nominee for president, has mastered the art of powering through grueling 90-hour workweeks. Her secret? A consistent morning routine that sets her up for success.
Fueling Up for a Busy Day
Harris starts each day with a balanced breakfast and a workout, no matter how little sleep she’s had. “You know, mind, body, and spirit. That’s the only time of day I really own,” she told ex-NFL star Shannon Sharpe’s podcast. Her go-to breakfast consists of a spinach omelet, chicken apple sausage, and toast – a far cry from her previous staple of generic Raisin Bran and tea with lemon.
The Importance of Breakfast
Harris didn’t always prioritize breakfast, but she’s come to realize its significance in preparing her for her demanding workdays. Research shows that skipping breakfast can negatively impact mood and sleep quality. In fact, people living in areas with high life expectancies, known as “blue zones,” make breakfast a priority. According to longevity researcher Dan Buettner, “Breakfast gives your body the energy to make it through the day and can be an opportunity to get a lot of healthy foods into your body to start the day.”
Consistency is Key
Harris values consistency, from her morning routine to her punctuality. She believes in respecting others’ time by starting meetings on schedule. “I’ve never seen an elected leader who is always on time, but I feel that I owe other people the respect of knowing their time is important,” she told Brené Brown’s podcast.
Prioritizing Self-Care
With a schedule that often involves traveling to multiple cities in a single day, Harris recognizes the importance of taking care of herself. Her morning workout and healthy breakfast provide her with the energy and focus she needs to tackle her busy days. By prioritizing her own well-being, Harris is able to perform at her best and inspire others to do the same.
