The Magic of Disney’s Holiday Transformation
As the spooky season comes to a close, Disney’s domestic theme parks are undergoing a magical metamorphosis, trading in pumpkins for poinsettias. This intricate process takes about six weeks to complete, with a team of experts working tirelessly behind the scenes to bring the festive atmosphere to life.
A Year-Round Effort
The planning for this transformation begins 12 months in advance, involving various departments such as horticulture, tech services, and culinary experts. The installation of “inconspicuous” elements, like lighting rigs, starts about two weeks before Halloween, with most of the work taking place during overnight hours when the park is closed.
A Disney Tradition
According to Disneyland Resort President Ken Potrock, “Halloween and the holidays are two very magical seasons, and our guests keep coming back year after year for both continued traditions and new surprises.” This dedication to creating unique experiences is what sets Disney apart, making the holiday season a big business for the company.
Revenue and Traffic Boost
October and December are two of the most popular travel months for Disney parks, generating significant revenue and traffic. In fact, the experiences division, which includes parks, cruises, hotels, and consumer products, generated $9.13 billion in revenue during the period from October through December 2023.
Exclusive Offerings
Starting November 8 at Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida, and November 15 at the Disneyland Resort in Anaheim, California, Disney’s winter holiday offerings will be in full swing. This includes sparkling ornamented trees, glitzy character costumes, limited-time food and beverage options, and exclusive merchandise.
Repeat Visitation
The end of the year also brings a lot of repeat visitation, especially from local parkgoers. By building a tradition around these decorations and limited-time specials, Disney has created a sense of anticipation and excitement among its guests.
Holiday Overlays and Attractions
At Disneyland, holiday overlays for Sleeping Beauty’s Castle, It’s a Small World, and Haunted Mansion will debut on November 15. Seasonal parades, fireworks, and festivals will also launch, and Santa Claus will take up residence at the Redwood Creek Challenge Trail. At the Walt Disney World resort, Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party launches on November 8, and Jollywood Nights start on November 9.
A Time for Celebration
With Halloween now over, Disney has turned its attention to the winter holiday season. This magical time of year brings a sense of wonder and joy to guests of all ages, making it the perfect time to visit the Happiest Place on Earth.
