A Chance Discovery

Vincent Orr’s life took a dramatic turn in 2017 when he stumbled upon an advertisement for the Detroit Land Bank Authority. As a production supervisor at Chrysler, Orr had been looking for ways to invest his money, and this opportunity seemed too good to pass up. He bid on a three-bedroom, one-and-a-half-bath house in his neighborhood and won it for $2,100. Little did he know, this was just the beginning of his journey to revitalize Detroit’s abandoned neighborhoods.

A Rude Awakening

When Orr finally gained access to the inside of the house, he was met with a giant hole in the roof, water damage, and outdated electrical and plumbing systems. Despite the daunting task ahead, Orr was undeterred. He saw potential in the 1920s-built house and was excited to restore it to its former glory.

A Labor of Love

With a nine-month deadline to renovate the property, Orr rolled up his sleeves and got to work. He estimates he spent $40,000 fixing up the house, but the end result was worth it. His mother moved in rent-free, fulfilling a childhood promise Orr had made to her.

Expanding His Horizons

Two years later, Orr bought the adjacent property for $1,200, which had also been abandoned for over a decade. The condition was worse than the first house, but Orr was drawn to its unique architecture. He spent $60,000 renovating it and now leases it to a family friend rent-free.

A Vision for the Future

Orr’s latest acquisition is a vacant lot on the north side of his original property, which he purchased for just $100. He plans to build a new house on the lot, doing most of the work himself. With his own hardwood and epoxy flooring business taking off, Orr is determined to create a thriving community in Detroit.
