Electrifying the Trucking Industry: A New Approach
The journey to electrify vehicles is underway, with cars and small trucks making significant progress. However, big rigs pose a unique challenge. Despite accounting for only 10% of vehicles on the road, they produce nearly 30% of total vehicle carbon emissions.
The Trailer Takes Center Stage
California-based startup Range Energy is shifting the focus from the tractor to the trailer. By electrifying trailers, they can power and propel themselves, reducing the load on the tractor. This innovative approach tackles the issue of insufficient charging infrastructure and long charging times.
A Smart Solution
Range Energy’s system incorporates batteries, a motor, and a “smart kingpin” to improve truck efficiency. The electrified trailer can also refrigerate itself, power onboard communications and security systems, all at a fraction of the cost of diesel. According to CEO Ali Javidan, “The trailer’s mission is to make itself feel weightless.”
Pilot Program Yields Promising Results
Northern Refrigerated Transportation is piloting Range trailers in California, having previously tried electric tractors. The company’s COO, Ricky Souza, notes that Range Energy’s trailers seem more feasible, as they can charge at night while being loaded.
Overcoming Infrastructure Challenges
While there are infrastructure hurdles to overcome, such as power supply and cost, Souza believes that fuel savings could offset these expenses. Range Energy has raised $31.5 million in funding and is backed by prominent investors.
A Game-Changer for the Industry
Tyler Engh, founder and general manager of R7, sees Range Energy’s technology as a key to accelerating mass adoption of hybridization or electrification in current fleets. With 70% of US freight transported by trucks, electrifying trailers could have a significant impact.
Charging Ahead
While charging infrastructure remains a challenge, Javidan suggests that trucking companies can leverage available power at loading docks. Range Energy’s battery pack is sized similarly to those in passenger vehicles, making it a more viable solution. As the industry continues to evolve, innovations like Range Energy’s electrified trailers may hold the key to a cleaner, more efficient future.
