Haiti Flights Grounded: FAA Imposes 30-Day Ban Amid Safety Concerns

Safety Concerns Ground Flights to Haiti

The Federal Aviation Administration has imposed a 30-day ban on all U.S. civilian flights to and from Haiti, citing safety concerns after a Spirit Airlines plane came under gunfire while attempting to land in Port-au-Prince.

Gunfire Forces Flight Diversion

On Monday, Spirit Airlines Flight 951 from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, was forced to divert to Santiago in the Dominican Republic after being damaged by gunfire. Fortunately, only one flight attendant suffered minor injuries, and no passengers were harmed. The airline subsequently diverted two other flights as a precautionary measure.

Other Airlines Follow Suit

JetBlue Airways and American Airlines have also canceled their flights to the Haitian capital, citing concerns over gang-led violence and disruptions to roads, ports, and airports. The U.S. State Department has warned of armed violence and travel disruptions in the region.

FAA Restrictions

The FAA’s ban not only prohibits U.S. flights from landing in Haiti but also restricts them from flying below 10,000 feet in Haitian airspace. This move aims to ensure the safety of passengers and crew members amid the volatile situation.

Travel Disruptions

The travel disruptions come as the U.S. Embassy in Port-au-Prince warns of gang-led efforts to block travel to and from the capital. The situation is being closely monitored, and travelers are advised to exercise extreme caution when planning trips to Haiti.
