Tesla Recalls 2,431 Cybertrucks Due to Defective Drive Inverters
Safety Concerns Prompt Sixth Recall of Electric Pickup
Tesla is recalling 2,431 Cybertrucks in the United States to replace defective drive inverters, according to recent notices from the National Highway Traffic Administration. This marks the sixth recall of the angular steel pickup since its launch about a year ago.
The Problem: Loss of Propulsion
The defective drive inverter can cause the vehicle to lose propulsion, increasing the risk of a collision. Tesla has stated that if the inverter stops producing torque, the driver will be unable to apply torque to the vehicle using the accelerator pedal, resulting in a loss of propulsion.
A Growing Concern
This latest recall comes on the heels of Tesla’s previous recall, which addressed an issue with the truck’s backup cameras. The company fixed the problem with an over-the-air software update. Despite these setbacks, the Cybertruck has become the third best-selling fully electric vehicle in the US during the third quarter of 2024.
Regulatory Scrutiny
Tesla is currently facing four known NHTSA investigations into possible safety defects in its vehicles. One of the most serious concerns involves the company’s premium driver assistance system, marketed as “Full Self-Driving Supervised.” The system’s safety in reduced visibility conditions, such as glaring sunlight and fog, is under scrutiny.
A Changing Regulatory Landscape
Tesla CEO Elon Musk has had a contentious relationship with federal regulators, including NHTSA, for years. With Musk’s newfound influence in the Department of Government Efficiency, established by President-elect Trump, the company may seek to cut federal spending and regulations, including those related to motor vehicle safety standards.
What’s Next?
As Tesla navigates these recalls and regulatory challenges, the company’s commitment to safety and innovation will be closely watched. With the Cybertruck’s popularity on the rise, Tesla must address these concerns to maintain consumer trust and confidence in its products.
