Trump’s Election Win Puts Legal Battles on Hold

Trump’s Legal Battles Put on Hold Amid Election Victory

In a surprising move, the Georgia Court of Appeals has canceled oral arguments scheduled for December 5 in the criminal election interference case against President-elect Donald Trump and other co-defendants. The court did not provide a reason for the sudden cancellation.

Fulton County DA Fani Willis Remains on the Case

Earlier this year, Judge Scott McAfee allowed DA Willis to remain on the case despite revelations of a romantic relationship with a top prosecutor assigned to the case. Trump and other defendants had appealed that ruling, which led to the Court of Appeals halting proceedings in the case pending the outcome of that effort.

Other Criminal Cases Against Trump in Limbo

Three other criminal cases against Trump have been put on hold since his presidential election victory nearly two weeks ago. In a New York state case, a judge delayed ruling on whether to toss out guilty verdicts against Trump in his criminal hush money case, citing the need to evaluate how Trump’s electoral win affects the case.

US Department of Justice Expected to Dismiss Two Cases

The U.S. Department of Justice is expected to dismiss two other criminal cases against Trump due to his election victory. One of these cases involves charges related to trying to overturn President Joe Biden’s 2020 win in the national election, while the other involves charges connected to Trump’s retention of classified government documents after leaving the White House.

Federal Appeals Court Grants Request to Suspend Proceedings

Special counsel Jack Smith has appealed the dismissal of the Florida case and asked the 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals to suspend proceedings, citing Trump’s election victory. The federal appeals court granted Smith’s request, putting the case on hold.

As Trump’s legal battles continue to unfold, one thing is clear: his election victory has thrown a wrench into the works, leaving many questions unanswered about the future of these cases.
