Women’s Basketball on the Rise: Cleveland Bids for WNBA Expansion Team
As the popularity of women’s sports continues to soar, several cities are vying for a chance to host a WNBA expansion team. Cleveland, Ohio, is among the top contenders, with Rock Entertainment Group, the umbrella company of sports and entertainment properties owned by Dan Gilbert, submitting a proposal for a WNBA team.
A Strong Foundation for Success
Cleveland boasts a unique combination of infrastructure, culture, and foundational pieces that make it an attractive location for a WNBA team. The city is home to professional teams like the NBA’s Cavaliers, NFL’s Browns, MLB’s Guardians, and American Hockey League’s Monsters, demonstrating its ability to support multiple sports franchises.
State-of-the-Art Facilities
The Cavaliers recently announced a partnership with the Cleveland Clinic to create a new Performance Center, providing top-notch training facilities for both the Cavs and the public. Additionally, the Cavs’ existing practice facility in Independence, Ohio, could be easily adapted for a WNBA team.
Passionate Fan Base
Cleveland is renowned for its dedicated sports fans, who have consistently supported their teams through thick and thin. This loyal fan base would provide a solid foundation for a WNBA team.
Competition for Expansion
Cleveland is not alone in its bid for a WNBA team. At least 10 cities, including Denver, Miami, Milwaukee, St. Louis, and Philadelphia, have expressed interest in hosting a team. WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert has stated that the league is looking for cities with committed ownership groups, suitable practice facilities, and strong demographics.
A Growing League
The WNBA has seen significant growth in recent years, with the addition of new franchises in Golden State, Toronto, and Portland. The league aims to expand to 16 teams by 2028, and Cleveland is well-positioned to be part of this growth.
A City on the Rise
Cleveland has undergone significant transformation in recent years, with a resurgence in downtown development and a growing economy. The city’s ability to host high-profile events, such as the 2024 NCAA Women’s Final Four, demonstrates its capacity to support large-scale sporting events.
A Confident Bid
With its strong foundation, passionate fan base, and growing economy, Cleveland is confident in its bid for a WNBA expansion team. As David Gilbert, CEO of the Cleveland Sports Commission, stated, “Cleveland is a real crazy sports town… It’s so closely tied to the identity of the city that’s had, the last couple of generations, some tough times.”
