A New Era for Airline Regulation?
The aviation industry is bracing for a potential shift in regulatory approach with the change in administration. Delta Air Lines CEO Ed Bastian has expressed optimism about the Trump administration’s stance on regulation, calling it a “breath of fresh air.” Bastian believes that the industry has experienced “overreach” in recent years, particularly with regards to consumer protection rules.
A Fresh Look at Regulation
During his campaign, President-elect Donald Trump promised to take a fresh look at regulation and bureaucracy. This could signal a more industry-friendly approach, which would be a welcome change for airlines. The U.S. Department of Transportation, led by Secretary Pete Buttigieg, has introduced several rules aimed at protecting consumers, including a requirement for automatic cash refunds when flights are canceled.
Industry Concerns
Airlines have pushed back against some of these regulations, arguing that they go too far. The department is also investigating the lucrative loyalty programs that generate billions of dollars for carriers. Bastian’s comments suggest that the industry is eager for a more collaborative approach to regulation.
Growth and Profits Ahead
Despite regulatory uncertainty, Delta is confident about its future prospects. The airline expects to grow sales and profits in the coming months and years, driven by resilient consumer demand and increasing household wealth since the pandemic.
Industry Hopes for Stability and Resources
Other airline CEOs, such as American Airlines’ Robert Isom and Sun Country Airlines’ Jude Bricker, have echoed Bastian’s sentiments. They are calling for stability and resources to improve air traffic control and other key infrastructure. The industry is also hoping for a more open approach to mergers and consolidation, which could lead to greater efficiency and competition.
A Shift in Approach?
The incoming administration may be more receptive to airline deals, such as Alaska Airlines’ acquisition of Hawaiian Airlines. This could signal a shift away from the more stringent approach taken by the Biden administration, which blocked several airline deals. As Sun Country’s Bricker noted, “Perhaps this administration would have a different stance.”
