Crackdown on Line Cutters: American Airlines Introduces New Boarding Technology
Protecting Elite Perks
American Airlines is taking a stand against travelers who try to sneak onto the plane before their boarding group is called. The airline has introduced new technology to prevent line cutting, ensuring that high-paying elite frequent flyers get the perks they deserve.
How it Works
Customers who attempt to scan their boarding pass before their group is called will hear a distinct two-note sound and be turned away. This system is designed to maintain the exclusivity of earlier boarding for top-tier frequent flyers and first-class customers.
Rolling Out Nationwide
As of Wednesday, the new technology is available at over 100 nonhub airports across the US, following successful tests at Albuquerque International Sunport, Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport, and Tucson International Airport. The airline plans to extend this technology to its hubs soon.
Peak Travel Season
The rollout comes just in time for the busy Thanksgiving travel period, with American Airlines expecting 8.3 million passengers to board its planes between November 21 and December 3. This represents a significant increase of 500,000 customers compared to last year.
Other Airlines Follow Suit
American Airlines is not the only carrier taking steps to prevent gate crowding. United Airlines, for instance, texts customers when it’s their turn to board and provides live updates on iPhones and Apple Watches. Digital signs also display which boarding group has been called.
A Faster, Smoother Boarding Process
By preventing line cutting and ensuring that passengers board in the correct order, airlines can speed up the boarding process and reduce congestion at the gate. This benefits both passengers and airlines, making for a more efficient and enjoyable travel experience.
