Electric Pickup Trucks Face Delay: Stellantis Pushes Back Launch to 2025
Industry Insights
The highly anticipated electric pickup trucks from Stellantis, including the all-electric “REV” model and the extended-range “Ramcharger,” will not hit the market this year as initially planned. Instead, the transatlantic automaker has delayed the launch to the first half of 2025.
CEO Carlos Tavares Explains the Delay
According to CEO Carlos Tavares, the company is facing a significant workload and wants to ensure that the products are thoroughly validated before release. “We don’t want to rush… It’s better to take a few weeks more to validate properly than to rush and then to make mistakes in terms of quality,” Tavares stated during an online media event.
Prioritizing Current Projects
Before focusing on the new trucks, Stellantis needs to complete work on the Dodge Charger Daytona and Jeep Wagoneer S EVs, which are expected to be released by the end of this year. These projects take priority, and the company wants to ensure they meet the highest standards.
STLA Frame Platform: A Game-Changer
The upcoming electric pickups will be built on Stellantis’ new “STLA Frame platform,” designed for larger trucks and Jeep SUVs. This multi-energy platform is capable of accommodating internal combustion engines, hybrids, electric models using batteries, fuel cells, and range-extended electric propulsion systems.
Performance and Range Expectations
The Ramcharger extended-range electric vehicle is expected to operate as a zero-emissions EV until its battery dies, and then an electric onboard generator powered by a 27-gallon, 3.6-liter V6 engine kicks in to power the vehicle. The REV is expected to have a range of 500 miles on a single charge, while the Ramcharger is anticipated to have a class-leading range of up to 690 miles.
Adapting to Changing Regulations
As Stellantis prepares to launch its electric vehicles in the U.S. market, the company faces uncertainty surrounding government incentives and regulations. President-elect Donald Trump has vowed to lower or repeal many Biden administration goals and funding for all-electric vehicles. Tavares has stated that the company “will adapt” to any changes made by the Trump administration.
A Critical Time for Electric Vehicles
Stellantis’ U.S. EV offensive comes at a critical time, as the industry faces potential changes to government incentives and regulations. Despite these challenges, the company remains committed to its electric vehicle strategy, recognizing the importance of adapting to a rapidly changing market.
