Trump Urges Republican Senators to Block Biden’s Judicial Nominees
As the clock ticks down on the current Senate session, President-elect Donald Trump is calling on Republican senators to prevent Democrats from confirming any more of President Joe Biden’s judicial nominees. In a recent social media post, Trump warned that Democrats are attempting to “stack the courts” with liberal judges before they lose their majority on January 3.
A Rush to Confirm Judges
The Senate has already confirmed 216 of Biden’s nominees to the federal judiciary, with 45 vacancies remaining. Despite Trump’s opposition, Democrats are pushing to confirm as many judges as possible before the end of the year. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer has vowed to focus on confirming Biden’s nominees during the remaining days of the session.
Divided Republican Response
Not all Republican senators are heeding Trump’s call to block Biden’s nominees. Moderate senators Susan Collins and Lisa Murkowski have voted to confirm some of Biden’s picks, drawing criticism from conservatives. Meanwhile, Senator JD Vance of Ohio responded defiantly to a Trump ally’s criticism, arguing that his presence would not have changed the outcome of a recent vote.
A Legacy of Judicial Appointments
President Biden is on pace to surpass Trump’s record of 227 judicial appointments during his first term. With dozens of nominees still awaiting confirmation, the stakes are high for both parties. As the Senate rushes to confirm judges, the implications for the federal judiciary will be felt for years to come.
The Battle for the Courts
The struggle over judicial appointments is just the latest chapter in the ongoing battle for control of the federal courts. With the balance of power shifting in the Senate, both parties are keenly aware of the significance of these appointments. As the clock runs out on the current session, the fate of Biden’s nominees hangs in the balance.
