Prasad Kalyanaraman, VP of infrastructure services at AWS, highlighted the significant improvements made to the electrical and mechanical design of the data centers. “We’ve innovated our power delivery design to these servers, ensuring better than 99% infrastructure availability,” he said. This streamlined hardware ensures data centers remain operational without interruptions.
Preparing for the Future of AI
AWS is gearing up for the launch of Nvidia’s Blackwell chips by incorporating liquid cooling capabilities into its data centers. Unlike traditional air-cooled servers, liquid cooling systems are necessary to manage the immense heat generated by these powerful chips.
The Heat is On
Heat management is a critical issue for computer components. If systems overheat, they slow down or shut off to prevent damage. Liquid cooling systems, similar to car radiators, circulate coolant through pipes to dissipate heat, ensuring optimal performance.
A Boon for Customers
With over 100,000 customers running generative AI applications, these innovations enable users to run more compute on AWS efficiently and reliably. “These enhancements allow customers to run a lot more compute on AWS, and we can run those services in a highly available way,” Kalyanaraman explained.
Electrical Efficiency Takes a Leap
Amazon is also improving overall electrical efficiency, enabling the company to extract more performance from the same amount of power. This 46% improvement in mechanical efficiency means more power is available for compute, reducing energy waste.
