In a move to address concerns over some of President-elect Donald Trump’s nominees, his transition team has reached an agreement with the Department of Justice to conduct background checks and start the security clearance process. This development comes amidst controversy surrounding Trump’s picks for top government positions, including the Defense Department, Health and Human Services, the FBI, and the director of national intelligence.
Controversial Nominees Spark Concerns
Several of Trump’s nominees have raised eyebrows, including Pete Hegseth, tapped to become the next Defense secretary, who has faced allegations of alcohol abuse, sexual impropriety, and mismanagement of non-profit veterans groups. Hegseth has denied any wrongdoing. Additionally, Trump’s initial pick for U.S. attorney general, Matt Gaetz, dropped out of contention after renewed focus on allegations of sexual misconduct. Gaetz also denies any wrongdoing.

The agreement between the transition team and the DOJ will allow the FBI to conduct background checks on nominees and appointees, providing additional insights and facilitating the transition process. Some Republican senators have also raised concerns about Trump’s nominees, including Hegseth. Senator Roger Wicker, the incoming chair of the Senate Armed Services Committee, stated that some members of his party have questions about Hegseth’s nomination and are seeking answers.
