South Korea’s Rise as a Defense Industrial Powerhouse
South Korea, known for its K-pop, K-dramas, and delicious cuisine, is now making waves in the defense industry. The country’s military manufacturing firms have seen their shares surge this year, driven by massive arms orders from around the world.
A Steep Increase in Global Military Expenditures
According to the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute, global military expenditures have increased for the ninth consecutive year, reaching a record $2.44 trillion in 2023. This 6.8% year-over-year rise is the steepest since 2009. Sang Hun Seok, an Indo-Pacific visiting fellow at the Royal United Services Institute, attributes this growth to a combination of increasing geopolitical uncertainties and a steady rise in global expenditure.
South Korea’s Arms Exports on the Rise
South Korea’s arms exports have been consistently increasing, from $2 billion in the late 2010s to $7.3 billion in 2021. In 2022, exports surged to $17.3 billion, and despite a slight dip to $14 billion in 2023, they are expected to exceed $20 billion in 2024. More countries are also importing defense products from South Korea, with the number of importing countries rising from four in 2022 to 12 in 2023.
The “Cheaper, Better, Faster” Mantra
South Korean arms are attractive to buyers due to their cost-effectiveness, faster production, and comparable performance to top-tier counterparts from other countries. The cost factor is a significant advantage, with South Korean exports being highly cost-efficient. For example, the Cheon-gong intercept missile, made by LIG Nex1, offers similar performance to the U.S. PAC-3 intercept missile at a third of the cost.
Production Capabilities and Compatibility
South Korea’s sustained investment in its defense industry has allowed it to maintain robust production capabilities, unlike some Western countries that scaled down their military production lines after the Cold War. This enables South Korean companies to deliver weapons quickly, making them an attractive option for countries seeking cost-effective alternatives with faster procurement timelines. Additionally, South Korean arms are highly compatible with U.S. and NATO systems, simplifying logistics for buyers.
Reliability and After-Sales Support
South Korean systems have significant reliability advantages compared to Russian or ex-Soviet weapon systems. The country’s regular joint military exercises with the U.S. have also ensured high compatibility with U.S. and NATO systems. South Korean defense companies are known for providing generous terms, including technological cooperation, local production, and financing, as well as extensive after-sales support.
