Tensions between Volkswagen and its employees have reached a boiling point, with nine factories in Germany brought to a standstill on Monday. The warning strikes, which saw workers carrying banners and participating in demonstrations, are a powerful show of unity against proposed changes to labor agreements and potential factory closures.

Thorsten Gröger, chief negotiator of key union IG Metall, warned that this could be the most intense wage dispute in Volkswagen’s history. His words were echoed by Daniela Cavallo, head of the Volkswagen works council, who urged workers to take a stand against the company’s plans.

Three rounds of negotiations have failed to yield a resolution, with further talks scheduled for later this month. Cavallo emphasized that the December 9 meeting would be crucial in determining the course of the conflict. This is not the first time Volkswagen has faced industrial action. In 2018, around 50,000 workers participated in major strikes, while smaller warning strikes took place in 2021. The current situation is particularly volatile, with the company’s decision to scrap labor agreements and end its employment protection agreement sparking widespread outrage.
