Autonomous Ride-Sharing Takes Off: Uber Partners with WeRide in Abu Dhabi
In a groundbreaking move, Uber has joined forces with Chinese autonomous vehicle developer WeRide to offer self-driving rides in Abu Dhabi. This partnership marks a significant milestone in the ride-hailing giant’s quest to revolutionize transportation.
Human Oversight Ensures Safety
Initially, each WeRide robotaxi hailed through the Uber app will have a human driver present to ensure a secure and reliable experience for riders and pedestrians. This safety measure will pave the way for a fully driverless commercial service later in 2025.
Robotaxis Hit the Roads
The autonomous vehicles will operate between Saadiyat Island and Yas Island, as well as routes to and from Zayed International Airport. WeRide, listed on the Nasdaq, holds permits for driverless vehicle testing and operations in Dubai, China, Singapore, and the U.S.
Uber’s Autonomous Strategy
On a recent earnings call, Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi highlighted the company’s partnerships with over a dozen autonomous vehicle companies. “Our autonomous strategy is working,” he emphasized, adding that AV partners recognize the significant value Uber can bring to their deployment plans. With tens of thousands of autonomous vehicle rides already facilitated in the U.S., Uber is poised to expand its reach globally.
Competitive Landscape
While Waymo, owned by Alphabet, presents both a partnership opportunity and competitive threat to Uber in the U.S., analyst James Cordwell believes autonomy will significantly expand the addressable market, positioning Uber as the aggregator of autonomous vehicle providers. Redburn Atlantic has a buy rating on Uber shares, with a 2025 year-end price target of $90.
