Bezos Buries Hatchet with Trump, Eyes Regulatory Relief

A New Era of Cooperation: Bezos Expects Regulatory Relief Under Trump Administration

In a surprising turn of events, Amazon founder Jeff Bezos expressed optimism about working with the incoming Trump administration, citing a potential reduction in regulatory hurdles. Speaking at The New York Times’ DealBook Summit, Bezos stated, “I’m actually very optimistic this time around… He seems to have a lot of energy around reducing regulation. If I can help do that, I’m going to help him.”

A History of Animosity

Despite Trump’s past criticism of Bezos and his companies, including Amazon and The Washington Post, the billionaire entrepreneur appears willing to put aside past differences. Trump had accused Bezos of dodging taxes, publishing “fake news,” and contributing to the decline of the U.S. Postal Service. Additionally, Bezos’ company lost a multibillion-dollar Department of Defense contract in 2019, which Amazon attributed to Trump’s “behind-the-scenes attacks.”

A Change of Heart?

However, this is not the first time Bezos has expressed optimism about working with Trump. In 2016, he attended a meeting with Trump and other tech leaders, where both parties appeared cordial. Bezos emphasized the importance of innovation and job creation, stating, “I shared the view that the administration should make innovation one of its key pillars, which would create a huge number of jobs across the whole country, in all sectors, not just tech—agriculture, infrastructure, manufacturing—everywhere.”

Recent Gestures of Goodwill

In the lead-up to the election, Bezos took steps to extend an olive branch to Trump. He congratulated Trump on his victory and praised his “grace under literal fire” following an attempted assassination attempt. Furthermore, Bezos decided not to endorse a candidate in the election, breaking with The Washington Post’s tradition.

The Future of Space Exploration

Bezos’ space company, Blue Origin, will likely interact closely with the Trump administration in the pursuit of federal contracts. This puts Blue Origin in direct competition with Elon Musk’s SpaceX, which has received significant support from Trump. As the space industry continues to evolve, it remains to be seen how these relationships will shape the future of space exploration.
