Britain’s Electric Vehicle Revolution Takes Off
A new report predicts that Britain will reach “peak petrol” by 2024, marking a significant shift towards electric vehicles (EVs). According to Auto Trader, the number of gasoline-powered cars on the country’s roads is expected to decline by almost half over the next decade, while EVs will become increasingly popular.
A Seismic Shift in Motoring
By 2034, the number of gasoline-powered cars is expected to drop to 11.1 million, down from 18.7 million in 2024. In contrast, the number of EVs on Britain’s roads is projected to surge to 13.7 million, up from 1.25 million in 2024. This growth is driven by improving affordability and government initiatives to promote sustainable transportation.
Government Targets and Industry Challenges
The UK government has set ambitious targets for electric vehicle adoption, requiring manufacturers to ensure that at least 22% of new cars sold are zero-emission vehicles. This target will increase to 28% next year and 100% by 2035. However, the industry faces challenges, including constrained supply, changing finance rules, and the need for significant investment in infrastructure.
Calls for Review and Support
Some have called for the government to review its zero-emission vehicle mandate, citing concerns about the high cost of EVs and the potential impact on the industry. However, environmental groups argue that the policy is crucial for reducing carbon emissions and achieving the UK’s climate goals.
Government Response and Investment
The UK government has announced plans to consult on how to support the industry in achieving its commitment to phase out internal combustion engines by 2030. It has also invested £2 billion in supporting the transition of domestic manufacturing and £300 million in driving the uptake of EVs.
