Dollar General Takes on Competition with Same-Day Delivery

In a bid to stay ahead of the competition, Dollar General is rolling out same-day delivery to customers’ homes. The discount retailer, known for its brick-and-mortar presence, is finally embracing the convenience trend that has become a hallmark of its competitors.

A Response to Growing Pressure

Dollar General’s move comes as it faces increasing pressure from retailers like Walmart, which has seen significant growth in its online business. Walmart’s curbside pickup and speedy home deliveries have set a new standard for convenience, forcing Dollar General to rethink its strategy.

A Soft Launch with Big Ambitions

On an earnings call, CEO Todd Vasos revealed that the company had “soft launched” its delivery program in September, with around 75 stores currently offering the service. While the rollout is still limited, Vasos expressed confidence that the service would eventually be available in “thousands of stores.”

Learning from Past Experiences

Dollar General’s foray into same-day delivery is informed by its experience with DoorDash deliveries, which are available at around 16,000 of its stores. The new program, dubbed DG Delivery, allows customers to place orders through the Dollar General app and receive their purchases in as little as an hour.

Key Features and Benefits

DG Delivery boasts several attractive features, including same-store prices, digital coupons, and cashback rewards. Perhaps most importantly, the service does not come with a fee or minimum order requirement.

A New Revenue Stream

Vasos sees same-day delivery as an opportunity to grow the retailer’s advertising business, as customers will engage more frequently with the app when placing orders. This could provide a much-needed boost to Dollar General’s revenue, which has been impacted by economic challenges and strategic missteps.

Still a Work in Progress

While DG Delivery is a promising development, it’s still only available at a tiny fraction of Dollar General’s over 20,000 stores. The company is still refining its business model for the online offering, relying on labor from a third-party provider rather than using store employees or company-employed delivery personnel.

As Dollar General continues to navigate the rapidly changing retail landscape, its same-day delivery initiative is a crucial step towards staying competitive and appealing to customers who increasingly expect convenience and flexibility.
