Textron Revamps Powersports Amid Slumping Demand

Textron Reassesses Powersports Unit Amid Weak Demand

The Cessna jet manufacturer Textron has announced that it is exploring strategic alternatives for its Powersports product line, citing persistent weak demand. This move comes as part of the company’s efforts to optimize its operations and reduce costs.

Powersports Unit Overview

The Powersports unit, which operates under the Textron Specialized Vehicles business within the Industrial segment, is responsible for manufacturing snowmobiles, recreational off-road vehicles, and related parts and accessories under the Arctic Cat brand.

Production Pause and Restructuring Efforts

Textron has paused production of its powersports products as management reviews strategic alternatives for the business. This decision is part of the company’s broader restructuring plan, announced in November 2023, aimed at reducing operating expenses. The plan includes measures such as reducing headcount at TSV, where demand for certain powersports products is expected to remain low.

Financial Implications

As a result of the production pause and contract termination costs, Textron now expects total pretax special charges from the restructuring plan to range between $190 million and $205 million, up from the previously announced range of $165 million to $170 million. The inventory valuation charge is expected to reduce adjusted profit for 2024 by approximately 12 cents to 16 cents per share. These charges will be recorded in the fourth quarter of 2024.

Adjusted Profit Forecast

In October, Textron forecast full-year 2024 adjusted profit to range between $5.40 and $5.60 per share. The company’s revised expectations reflect the ongoing challenges in the powersports market and its efforts to adapt to changing demand.

Looking Ahead

As Textron navigates the current market conditions, the company remains committed to optimizing its operations and exploring opportunities for growth. By reassessing its Powersports unit, Textron aims to position itself for long-term success and profitability.
