Boosting AI Semiconductor Supply Chain in the US
The US Commerce Department has taken a significant step towards strengthening the country’s semiconductor supply chain by awarding SK Hynix, a leading memory chip maker, up to $458 million in government grants. This funding will support the construction of an advanced chip packaging plant and research and development facility for artificial intelligence products in Indiana.
A Strategic Investment
In April, SK Hynix, a key supplier to Nvidia, announced plans to invest $3.87 billion in the West Lafayette facility, which will feature an assembly line for mass-producing next-generation high bandwidth memory chips. These chips are essential for training artificial intelligence systems and are used in graphic processing units.
Government Support
In addition to the grant, the Commerce Department plans to make available $500 million in government loans for the SK Hynix project. The grant funds will be distributed as the company meets project milestones. This investment is expected to create 1,000 jobs and fill a critical gap in the US semiconductor supply chain.
A Robust AI Semiconductor Supply Chain
Kwak Noh-Jung, CEO of SK Hynix, expressed enthusiasm for working with the US government to build a robust and resilient AI semiconductor supply chain in the country. This partnership is a significant step towards achieving that goal.
Congressional Support
The US government has demonstrated its commitment to strengthening the country’s semiconductor industry through the approval of a $39 billion subsidy program for US semiconductor manufacturing and related components, along with $75 billion in government lending authority, in August 2022.
Industry-Wide Investment
The Commerce Department has been awarding major grants to leading semiconductor manufacturers, including TSMC, Intel, Samsung Electronics, Micron, and SK Hynix. The department has finalized all of these awards, except for the $6.4 billion Samsung award. Earlier this month, it finalized a $75 million award to Absolics, an affiliate of SKC, for constructing a facility in Georgia to supply advanced materials to the US semiconductor industry.
