In a bid to regain its footing in the world’s largest smartphone market, Apple is in talks with Chinese tech giants Tencent and ByteDance to integrate their artificial intelligence models into iPhones sold in China. This move comes as Apple faces declining market share in the country, where domestic brands like Huawei are gaining ground.

The ChatGPT Conundrum

Apple recently rolled out OpenAI’s ChatGPT into its devices, but the AI chatbot is not available in China due to regulatory requirements. To comply with these regulations, Apple must partner with local companies to offer AI features in the region. Tencent and ByteDance are among the top contenders, with their own AI models, Hunyuan and Doubao, respectively.

A Crowded AI Field

China’s AI landscape is increasingly crowded, with dozens of large language models launched by tech firms and startups alike. Baidu’s Ernie is another notable player in the field. Apple’s partnership with any of these companies could be a major win, giving them a competitive edge in the Chinese market.

Technical Hurdles

Apple’s discussions with Tencent and ByteDance are still in the early stages, and previous talks with Baidu reportedly hit roadblocks due to technical issues. The use of iPhone user data to train AI models is a contentious point, and resolving these disputes will be crucial to any successful partnership.

Market Share at Stake

The absence of AI capabilities in Apple’s latest iPhones sold in China has been a significant setback for the company. As Huawei and other domestic brands continue to gain ground, Apple’s market share in the region is slipping. The company briefly fell out of China’s top five smartphone vendors in the second quarter before recovering in the third quarter. However, its smartphone sales in China still declined 0.3% during the third quarter from a year earlier.

The Huawei Factor

Huawei’s recent launch of its Mate 70 series, featuring AI capabilities powered by its proprietary large language model, has raised the stakes for Apple. The Chinese company’s sales surged 42% in the third quarter, according to research firm IDC. Apple must act quickly to regain its competitive edge in the region.
