In a groundbreaking agreement, nuclear startup Oklo and data center operator Switch are joining forces to deploy 12 gigawatts of power over the next two decades. This ambitious partnership aims to provide clean, reliable energy to millions of households across the United States.

A New Era in Nuclear Power

Oklo, backed by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, is pioneering the development of micro nuclear reactors. These innovative reactors are significantly smaller than traditional ones, ranging from 15 to 100 megawatts in power capacity. By comparison, the average reactor in the U.S. currently stands at around 1,000 megawatts.

Scaling Up Clean Energy

Through this partnership, Oklo will develop, build, and operate a fleet of small nuclear plants, selling electricity to Switch through power purchase agreements. The goal is to generate enough power to support over 9 million households in the U.S. by 2044. To achieve this, Oklo would need to build approximately 240 reactors of 50 megawatts each.

Transforming the Data Center Landscape

Switch, a privately held company, is committed to deploying advanced nuclear power on a massive scale for its data centers. This partnership marks a significant step towards reducing the carbon footprint of the tech industry, which is increasingly reliant on artificial intelligence and data centers.

The Future of Nuclear Energy

Oklo’s microreactors promise to reduce construction costs, slash timelines, and offer customers more flexible options. Although the company has yet to deploy a reactor, it plans to bring its first plant online at Idaho National Laboratory in 2027. As demand for nuclear power grows, Oklo is poised to play a leading role in shaping the future of clean energy.

Oklo’s partnership with Switch is part of a larger trend in nuclear investment. Tech giants like Amazon and Alphabet have already invested in small nuclear reactor technology, while Microsoft is helping to revive the Three Mile Island nuclear power plant.
