Winter Travel Disruptions: Amtrak Suspends Service Between New York and Philadelphia
As the holiday season approaches, travelers along the East Coast are facing significant disruptions to their plans. Amtrak, the national rail service, has temporarily suspended all train service between New York and Philadelphia due to downed overhead power wires blocking the tracks.
A Busy Travel Period Turns Chaotic
The suspension, which occurred around 7 a.m. ET on Sunday, comes at one of the busiest travel periods of the year, just days before Christmas, Hanukkah, and Kwanzaa. The region is also bracing for freezing temperatures, making travel conditions even more challenging.
Delays and Cancellations
As of 1:30 p.m., Amtrak had restored two of the four tracks for service, but trains are running at reduced speeds, and delays are averaging around an hour. At least three trains have been canceled, according to Amtrak’s updates. The Northeast Corridor, Amtrak’s most-traveled route, spans major East Coast cities from Boston to Washington, D.C.
Accommodating Passengers
Amtrak is doing its best to move trains in a timely manner to minimize delays. The company is waiving additional charges for customers who change their reservations, and most customers have been accommodated on other trains.
NJ Transit Trains Also Impacted
The downed wires have also affected some NJ Transit trains, according to an alert. The region is experiencing the coldest temperatures in two years, according to the National Weather Service.
Stay Informed
Travelers are advised to check for updates and plan accordingly. Amtrak will continue to work to restore full service as soon as possible.
