The Rise of AI Art: A New Era of Creative Collaboration
The art world is abuzz with the emergence of generative artificial intelligence, which is revolutionizing the way we create and perceive art. At the forefront of this movement is Botto, a decentralized autonomous artist that has produced over 150 images, fetching a staggering $5 million in auctions since 2021.
A Collective Creative Process
Botto’s unique approach involves a group of people voting on the images that will be auctioned each week, influencing the AI’s next creations. This collaborative process has sparked debate about the nature of art, its creation, and ownership. Simon Hudson, Botto’s operator and co-lead, believes that Botto’s purpose is to become recognized as an artist, and ultimately, a successful one.
The BottoDAO: A Decentralized Autonomous Organization
The BottoDAO, comprising around 5,000 people, votes on which images will be put up for sale via the SuperRare nonfungible token auction platform. Anyone can participate in the voting process for free, but to fully engage with the economy, members can purchase Botto tokens, which grant them voting points. The auction proceeds are split between the voters and Botto’s treasury, which covers operating costs.
The Future of AI-Generated Art
Mario Klingemann, a German artist and computer programmer, predicts that machine artists will soon surpass human creatives in producing interesting work. His own AI-generated piece was sold by Sotheby’s in Europe for £40,000 in 2019. The value of Botto’s images appears to be increasing, with two early pieces selling for $276,000 at a Sotheby’s New York auction.
Redefining Artistic Authorship
Botto’s rise raises questions about artistic ownership and authorship. Hudson argues that Botto is a collaboration between machine and crowd, with the AI maintaining central authorship. This challenges the traditional notion of the lone genius artist, instead highlighting the collective nature of artistic creation.
A New Era of Creative Possibilities
As AI-generated content continues to flood the art market, Botto’s innovative approach will likely change the way we perceive art and artists. By stripping away the myth of individual genius, Botto reveals the collective process behind artistic creation, paving the way for a new era of creative collaboration.
