The Tipping Point: Finding a Balance Between Gratitude and Budget
As the holiday season approaches, many of us are left wondering how to show appreciation for the people who make our lives easier without breaking the bank. With 6 in 10 adults viewing tipping negatively and 35% feeling it’s gotten “out of control,” it’s clear that the burden of tipping has become overwhelming.
The Pressure to Tip
Rising prices have stretched budgets thin, making it difficult to justify adding a couple dozen people to your gift budget. It’s no wonder people are feeling the strain. National etiquette expert Diane Gottsman notes, “A lot of what I’ve been talking about this year is, how do we trim our gift list?” It’s essential to remember that good etiquette doesn’t require overspending in the name of holiday generosity.
Setting Boundaries
So, how can you whittle down your tipping list to a manageable size? Start by setting a total budget, advises Thomas Farley, an etiquette expert and keynote speaker. “Sit down and figure out, first of all, how much can I afford? What is my total gratuity budget this year?” From there, prioritize the people you feel the most gratitude for.
Prioritizing Those Who Matter
One group that should be top of mind is anyone who deals directly with making your family life easier on a regular basis, such as nannies, regular babysitters, and pet sitters or dog walkers. These individuals provide a loyal service to you throughout the year and deserve recognition. Additionally, consider acknowledging people you interact with regularly but don’t typically tip, such as a door attendant at your apartment building or a superintendent who does regular repairs.
Finding a Balance
It’s essential to find a balance between showing gratitude and staying within your budget. As Daniel Post Senning, co-author of “Emily Post’s Etiquette, The Centennial Edition,” notes, “Good tipping feels good for everyone involved. Tipping that takes you beyond your budget will never feel good.” By setting boundaries and prioritizing those who matter most, you can show appreciation without sacrificing your financial well-being.
